Standard and fast way to get almost any kind of marked data

We have discovered a new website that makes getting market data a lot easier than it used to be.
It is called Quandl.com.

How can Quandl help you?

Downloading data

Most importantly, Quandl provides a standard way to access almost any kind of financial data you can imagine.

Basic charts

Quandl provides basic charts to discover the entire downloadable time frame or for embedding it to your website.

Basic data manipulation for analysis

You can combine datasets and apply basic transformations to data such as calculating day-by-day absolute and relative change or normalize data.

Importing data into other softwares automatically

Registered users get access to software packages that allow automatic data importing to Excel,Matlab, Python, Maple etc...

How does it work?

Quandl has indexed millions of time-series datasets from over 400 sources. All of Quandl's datasets are open and free.
Since Quandl is only indexing data sources, the site is rather a search engine than a data provider. If copyright data seems to be served through Quandl's website, they can be notified and that dataset is going to be removed from the index.
Unregistered users are limited to access to Quandl's data 50 times per day.
(Registered users' access limit is 500 / day)

Try it!

Let's see how easy it is to download data from Quadl:

US CPI data download from 1913

CPI (Consumer Price Index) measures the price level of a market basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households. The annual change of CPI expressed as percentage is called inflation
Thanks to US Bureau of Labor Statistics we can download historical US CPI data for free back until 1913. (Longest timeframe is only available for data that is not adjusted with seasonality.)
  1. Visit http://data.bls.gov/pdq/querytool.jsp?survey=cu
    • This website needs Java plugin. If you do not have it, visit this Java installation guide.
    • If Java is OK, you will see something like this:
Starting window for downloading CPI data
  2.  Set up data download and press "Get Data" when finished.
    • If you want to proceed quickly, select "US city average" for "Area" and "All items" for "Items". These are usually OK.
    • On the other hand, CPI can be different per location and items. If you want to know the historical CPI of a specific area or a specific group of consumer goods then select them from the list.
Starting window set up for getting CPI data.
  3. If both default time frame (30 years) and default output format is OK for you, press "Download .xls" and data file will be downloaded at once. Carry on with next steps otherwise.
