S&P 500 (GSPC) index historical data download
The Standard and Poor's 500
(S&P 500) index has been introduced in its current form on 4
March 1957, but it existed previously as well. From Quandl you can download free S&P 500 data back until 3 January 1950.
Steps for downloading S&P 500 market data
Step1: visit Quandl'sS&P 500 data download page
(http://www.quandl.com/YAHOO-Yahoo-Finance/INDEX_GSPC-S-P-500-Index)
It may happen that you meet
Quandl's tutorial first (see below). Press "Skip"!
(Tutorial introduces all features of Quandl – a lot of them is not
required for getting data.)
Step2: If
everything is OK, you should see something similar to the picture
below. Press "Download". (By
using default settings you will download EOD S&P
500 data from the broadest
date range. If this is not suitable for you, you can modify
settings.)
Step3: Choose a
format for downloading S&P 500 data from the next window.
Hint: ".csv"
and ."xls" formats are OK in most cases.
- You can open ".xls" files with MS Excel, Libre Office, etc.
- Most statistical or technical analysis tools need ".csv" files etc.
Press "Download
Data" to download data to your computer.
Possible problems
Number
of downloads per day is limited to 50 if you are not a registered
user of Quandl.com.
So if
you see an error message related to this when downloading S&P 500
historical data, you should either register or wait another day.
