We have discovered a new website that makes getting market data a lot easier than it used to be. It is called Quandl.com. How can Quandl help you? Downloading data Most importantly, Quandl provides a standard way to access almost any kind of financial data you can imagine.

The Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500) index has been introduced in its current form on 4 March 1957, but it existed previously as well. From Quandl you can download free S&P 500 data back until 3 January 1950. CPI (Consumer Price Index) measures the price level of a market basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households. The annual change of CPI expressed as percentage is called inflation .  If you would rather download inflation data, follow this guide . Thanks to US Bureau of Labor Statistics we can download historical US CPI data for free back until 1913. (Longest timeframe is only available for data that is not adjusted with seasonality.)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index has been introduced on 26 May 1896 at the base level near 30. From Stooq.com you can download DJIA data back until 27 May 1896!  Of course you can not await full EOD data for the 19th century (data must have been recorded manually from old newspapers), but it is still quite interesting... Stooq.com is a Polish website, but some parts of it is transleted into English. Do not be afraid of it, you can download Dow Jones data without knowing anything about Polish language! (You can also try using Google translate. Google Chrome will offer automatic translation as soon as you visit Stooq.com.) FTSE 100 index has been introduced on 3 January 1984 at the base level of 1000. From Yahoo! Finance you can download FTSE 100 data back until 2 April 1984. Alternatively you can check out these 5 year charts of FTSE or 10 year charts of FTSE . One of the most complete set of silver's historical data can be downloaded from Stooq.com. Stooq.com's data of silver goes back until 1792 (!). Of course you can not await full EOD data for the 18th century, but it is still quite interesting... Stooq.com is a Polish website, but some parts of it is transleted into English. Do not be afraid of it, you can download silver data without knowing anything about Polish language! (You can also try using Google translate. You can analyze stocks from National Stock Exchange of India using free data and free softwares. We recommend downloading data for share market of India from http://nseindia.com/ , because this source has better quality (eg.: it is more up to date than Yahoo! Finance) .

Looking up historical stock data may be useful for analysis eg.: you may observe in data how news affect stock price. You may also look up historical data to settle accounting debates. This is a quite tough problem since data sources are not always reliable.
